First Turkey Hunts are Always Great

Hi my name is Mindy Mertens. I am from Veblen South Dakota. I shot a Gobbler the second day of Spring turkey season 4-13-08.  It weighed in at 23 lbs. 8 3/4 inch beard, and 3/4 inch spurs. This was my first turkey hunt. My husband had gotten me interested in hunting turkeys. I hunted deer for awhile, and love it, but never knew that hunting turkeys would be just as fun. I was in a double bull blind. It was evening and we could hear gobblers gobbling away. We would call, and they would answer us back. They would get closer, then seem to get further away. We had decoys sitting out. Nothing came close. We did see a hen cross by and then walked away. It was getting later in the evening. We switched to a box call, and that seemed to get the best response. Soon they started getting closer. Finally he came in to view strutting around like he owned the place. He was so ugly, but beautiful at the same time. He would strutt in with such elegance, and then he would stop and drum...So Awesome!!! We had ranged a stick that was in the back of the blind, which we had switched to because, they were coming from behind us in the blind instead of the front so we moved everything around. Anyway the stick was about 25yards. When he came in a little before the 25 yard stick he got kinda leary I think. So he turned to the side and I took the shot. Little over 25 yards with my bow and my first kill with my bow..It was so awesome and I was so proud to have shared it with my husband.

“My first year of turkey hunting would not have been possible without my wonderful guide. I started dating an old high school sweetheart, Bart Merchant, after our 30 year class reunion. I was already an avid deer hunter, but had never turkey hunted before this year. I did not have a left handed gun or any of the special gear to turkey hunt. For Christmas I got snake boots and leafy wear. I inherited a vest from one he had for his son that he could no longer wear. I not only needed a left handed gun, but I needed a gun with a youth stock. I was amazed when one day, only several days before the season, he came home with a Benelli M90 camo left-handed shotgun. He shot it and made sure of the type of ammo I needed.
On April 5, 2008 Bart, his son and I rise early to go to Gilder Creek Hunting Club, where I am a member, to turkey hunt. I had never shot this gun and had only observed him and Lucas kill a turkey. They are members in the low country of SC and members only can shot a turkey. They had gotten a double on opening morning as I watched. This had fired me up to kill a turkey. We got there before day light and Bart made an owl call and two gobbled in opposite directions. This really fired me up and made me nervous, because I was unsure of which way to go. Of couse, he said, "Which one you want to go after?" I am like I don't know. We walked, sit and called for some time, but never got on that bird. It seemed like it would go in the opposite direction every time. We had been in one spot earlier in the morning that Bart had said, "Somebody can kill a turkey here." After much walking, we were passing that spot again and he said, "Let's sit here again and make a few calls." We did.
After the first call and we sat so quietly for about 20 minutes and having no response from a turkey, he hit the mouth call again. There was the gobbler not far away and he gobbled to let us know he was near. I was so nervous! Bart and Lucas had told me this would be my shot, but they were both beside me and watching. Talking about the pressure! WOW!! I don't do pressure well anyway. I heard Lucas and Bart say, "Here he comes, I can see him!" Well I could not see him. I thought I was hunkered down and ready for the shot, but when I did see him, I did not have the gun raised enough and it sure wasn't pointed in the right direction. He was coming up the road and I thought please stop behind that tree and don't see me raise the gun. I was shaking all over. Bart was saying softly- SHOT SHOT. I thought- I can't he will see me raise the gun. He stepped behind the tree heading for the She Mobile and I raised the gun and positioned myself for the clearing I thought he would be stepping through. I was stilll shaking and wondered if I could even hit a turkey, much less in the head. When the shot was open on him, I pulled the trigger. Well he went sailing since he was only 15 to 20 yards from me and I had not made the head shot. I had made a fabulous body shot. Yes, I know that is not the way it is suppose to be done, but hey, I killed it.
I jumped up and ran with my shaking legs. I was so excited. I juimped up and done and hugged Bart. He said, "I told you a turkey could be killed in this spot." He was proud and happy for me and I surely was. He said that he was sure there was no other bird around after my excitement so we packed up and left. It was several hours later that this picture was made since we had to ride the bird around and show everyone I knew. It all comes down to the fact that I would never have killed it if it had not been for Bart! It is awesome to be able to hunt with the ones you love and you both can appreciate nature and the sport of hunting. I t doesn't get any better!”

I’m so glad I found the Women’s Hunting pants. It is so hard to find good quality hunting clothes that actually fit. Keep up the good work.
